The end-of-year honor roll often hails the brands that have created the best foundation formulas or the most long-wearing lipsticks, but let’s not forget the many moments and efforts that are worth recognizing from industry stalwarts and even new players. In this year's The Beauty Edit Honor Roll, we put the spotlight on the year’s remarkable “beauty bests”—the ones that have contributed to and continuously help shape the beauty world today, from brands that made a remarkable pivot in the pandemic to those that have have made their community’s interest a priority as much as their own. Here, the industry’s movers and shakers that have breathed in more value into their consumers’ lives during the toughest times and the stories of several brand initiatives that changed the beauty game today—and perhaps in the years to come.

With tons of new skincare products launched almost every month, add to that the intensive and complicated routines everyone recommends, and can sometimes leave you feeling more stressed out than relaxed, it’s no surprise that an e-commerce beauty retail site such as The Collective came into existence. These concerns prompted founders, Dominique Cojuangco and Michael Hearn, to build “an inclusive platform where you wouldn’t have to do the guesswork anymore.” Thanks to their brainchild, self-care will no longer feel like a chore.

Break Your Stigma

The harrowing effects of the pandemic left most, if not all, of us at the brink of insanity. There was just so much we could take as we were all in survival mode. Whether we admitted it or not, we badly needed help at one point, and perhaps most of us just didn’t know where to look. This was why BYS Philippines, an Australian makeup brand known for its “fashionability” and trendy innovations, took their role as industry leaders seriously—and to the next level—by launching their Break Your Stigma digital platform. The website is “dedicated to helping Filipinos gain access to a directory of mental health professionals we can connect with, and learn new ways to be kinder to ourselves and one another.”

Shiseido Philippines, with brands NARS, Laura Mercier, Shiseido, and now Drunk Elephant, under its helm, has partnered with CARE Philippines, to commemorate its first year (2020) in the country by donating portions of their sales. The manifestation of Shiseido’s core values was evident through the company’s continuing efforts—working hand-in-hand with a reputable global institution that helps eradicate poverty, empower women and young girls, and assist people who are affected by disasters and conflict.

Pink Ball and the Campaign

The Estee Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign was founded by the late Evelyn H. Lauder in 1992, with a mission to support further research and reach breakthroughs on breast cancer. Since its launch, the campaign has funded “medical research and fellowships worldwide” and supported the “building and updating of various care centers to treat and support breast cancer patients, to name a few.” Last October 2022, Estee Lauder Companies PH hosted a charity gala, called The Pink Ball, to celebrate the campaign’s 30th year. Through this momentous event, the company was able to raise roughly 10 million pesos which will allow them to fund over 6,000 mammograms for Filipinas for free, among others.
