A new story is revealed as Diptyque celebrates its 60th anniversary in 5 chapters. Welcome to Chapter 2, a new fragrance named after the hidden club in Paris’ Latin Quarter frequented by the brand’s founders in the late ‘60s: Orpheon.
Imagine a fragrance inspired by this 2-floor salon that reverberated with 2 distinct ambiances. “The beautiful vaulted caven, smoky and festive, offered music, dancing, and shows;” and the ground floor, a quieter enclave with a cocktail bar, its seating with crimson velvet and its lighting subdued, where artists, writers, actors, travelers, and more converged and conversed. Here was where the 3 founders of Diptyque spent hours after work, where their ideas flowed freely, and where they would bring friends to meet.
This legendary background is recreated in Orpheon, where Diptyque brings the elements of the ‘60s club in this collectible.
Cedar, vetiver, patchouli represents the interiors dominated by wood, from the tables to the dancefloor.
A sharp note of juniper berries evoke their drink of choice, a gin fizz with a slice of lemon and a drop of green tangerine.
Mastic and galbanum and a smooth accent of honeycomb and rockrose provide the lingering fog that reminds you of fine cigars and tobacco.
Ylang-ylang from the Comoros archipelago, magnolia from China, Arabian jasmine, Turkish damascena add a floral and powdery aspect to the fragrance, representing the women who frequented the club while musk and amber represent the dandified men.
Finally, tonka bean and vanilla flavored Laotian benzoin provide warmth much like the salon’s warm subdued lighting.
It’s a gender-free fragrance definitely, and with quite a resinous entrance; a floral-woody masterpiece. What a story for Diptyque! I cannot wait for the next chapters.
